Dehydrated & freeze-dried meals are a good alternative to offering fresher dog food if you’re not ready to make the switch to a raw dog food diet quite yet. I made the switch from kibble to raw via a little detour of dehydrated & freeze-dried.
The following brands are great options to feeding your pups a fresher, more nutritious diet:
Dr. Harvey’s – Dehydrated & Freeze-Dried
Dr. Harvey’s Grain-Free Veg-to-Bowl is a pre-mix which makes a fresh, homemade dog food in minutes (just add water, meat, and oil) which is perfect for raw diets following the BARF model (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food: raw meat, organs, bones, and vegetables – as opposed to the Alpha Prey Model which doesn’t add vegetables to raw meat, bones, and organs).
It consists of dehydrated and freeze-dried vegetables, organic herbs, as well as essential vitamins & minerals. It is free of preservatives, additives, colorings, dyes, sugar, salt, fillers, corn, wheat, and soy.
We began our journey from kibble to a raw diet with Dr. Harvey’s Grain-Free Veg-to-Bowl.
Dr. Harvey’s also offers a complete & balanced freeze-dried line of dog food – Oracle Grain-Free & Oracle Whole Grain (available in Beef, Chicken, & Fish – comes in 3 lb and 6 lb bags, as well as in a trial size of 3 oz).
Sojos – Freeze-Dried

Sojos Grain-Free Dog Food Mix is similar to Dr. Harvey’s grain-free Veg-to-Bowl – it’s also great to add to a BARF diet (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food: raw meat, organs, bones, and vegetables – as opposed to the Alpha Prey Model which doesn’t add vegetables to raw meat, bones, and organs).
It is a grain-and gluten-free dog food pre-mix that’s served with water & meat. It consists of freeze-dried vegetables AND fruits, vitamins, and minerals, and does not contain any preservatives, fillers, by-products, corn, wheat, or soy.
Grandma Lucy’s – Freeze-Dried

Grandma Lucy’s has been family owned & operated since 1999 & makes 3 lines of freeze-dried dog (& cat) foods:Â
Artisan Line (Chicken, Pork, Lamb, Venison, Bison; made with potatoes)
Pureformance Line (Chicken, Lamb, Rabbit, Goat, Fish; made with chickpeas)
Valor Line (Turkey, Fish, Chicken; made with quinoa).
All 3 lines consist of freeze-dried vegetables, fruits, vitamins, and minerals – perfect to add to a BARF diet (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food: raw meat, organs, bones, and vegetables – as opposed to the Alpha Prey Model which doesn’t add vegetables to raw meat, bones, and organs).
All of Grandma Lucy’s foods are grain-free & made right here in the USA. You’ll never find any preservatives, by-products, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in any of their foods and/or treats.
Please be aware of the fact that the dehydrated & freeze-dried dog food brands mentioned above only made it on this list of recommendations because I have fed them, have been very satisfied with their products, and Missy & Buzz have done exceedingly well with everything they’ve had.
