Raw Lamb For Dogs Makes A Great Kong Filler

Raw dog food such as raw lamb for dogs makes a great KONG dog toy filler!

Actually, ground raw dog food in general can easily be filled into Kong toys for dogs.

What I like about lamb, however, is that it’s a novel protein that’s not commonly included in commercial dog food.

That means that lamb is a great protein for dogs with food sensitivities to more commonly used ingredients like chicken and beef.

Now, in this blog post, I’m sharing 3 different sources of grass-fed, free range lamb with y’all!

As far as dog food puzzles are concerned, they’re great to mentally engage dogs and keep them busy.

However, it can be a little tricky to find an interactive feeder that’s compatible with raw dog food. That’s why I personally love to use Kong dog toys to extend doggie mealtime.

Update: Fast forward several years and there are several dog slow feeders that work for raw dog food now!

Although KONG dog toys are still my favorite slow feeder as far as extended boredom busters go!

Especially because you can stick the filled Kong into the freezer to turn it into a frozen kong treat.

Not only does it last extra long, it’s also great to cool your pooch off during summer time.

Key Benefits of Grass-Fed Raw Lamb for Dogs

Lamb is rich in zinc which is a mineral known for helping maintain a strong immune system.

It also provides essential minerals such as Potassium, Iron, Manganese, Thiamine, Vitamins E, B12 and D3.

Additionally, grass-fed lamb is also a great source of Omega-3 fatty acids.

Last but not least on our list of lamb benefits for dogs is that it’s even known as a healthy red meat alternative for dogs with allergies or intolerances to other traditional red meats.

So if your pup doesn’t do well with chicken or beef, give lamb a try!

Darwin’s Raw Lamb Meals for Dogs

For this particular Kong filler, I used Darwin’s ground raw lamb for dogs from their Naturals Selection.

Darwin’s sources their grass-fed lamb from Australia, New Zealand and the USA.

Neither of these lambs have ever been treated with hormones, steroids or antibiotics.

Raw Paws Pet Food (RPPF) Complete Raw Lamb for Dogs (& Cats)

Raw Paws Pet Food sources their free-range lambs from a family farm in Indiana.

Their Complete Raw Lamb for Dogs consists of 80% meat, 10% secreting organs and 10% bones.

That said, the main difference between this raw lamb formula and the one from Darwin’s is that this one doesn’t feature any vegetables or added minerals.

Unlike Darwin’s raw lamb, the RPPF kind includes other secreting organs besides liver – kidney and spleen. That’s why it doesn’t need the addition of a mineral mix.

Just FYI.

Ingredients of RPPF Complete Lamb for Dogs

Lamb Meat, Lamb Heart, Lamb Tongue, Lamb Tail, Lamb Liver, Lamb Kidney, Lamb Spleen.

It comes in a 1lb tube. Just FYI, back in 2017, their ground lamb came as a 5lb bag. I’m including a picture below the current offer just for nostalgia’s sake 🙂

Unlike Darwin’s raw lamb formula, these grinds don’t feature any vegetables or mineral mixes.

Instead, they add two secreting organs.

Are KONG Dog Toys Dishwasher Safe?

Yep, they sure are!

The best part about these Kong dog toys is hands down that they’re top-rack dishwasher safe.

I absolutely love this about Kong dog toys, along with the fact that they’re made of natural rubber right here in the States.

Tip: If there’s some meat that’s stuck in the Kong because your dog can’t get it out, let it soak in a dish with water for a few hours.

That will loosen the meat so you can wash it out before you stick it into the dishwasher.

Raw Lamb For Dogs: Bottom Line

Kong dog toys are my favorite dog food puzzles to be used with raw dog food. Clean up is easy peasy too because Kongs are top-rack dishwasher-safe.

There are Kong toys for dogs for chewers of all strengths!

They range from:

Missy’s red Kong toy (pictured below) is perfect for moderate chewers.

Wally’s black Kong is an extreme dog toy for aggressive chewers (also pictured below).

Although there are a lot of new slow feeder options for dogs these days,

I find that the hollow Kongs still work best for extended mealtime fun.

That’s because they can turn into frozen Kong treats in no time!

There are 3 great raw dog food brands in the US that I’ve ordered ground lamb from over the years.

For this particular Kong filler recipe, I chose Darwin’s raw lamb dog food.

I also highly recommend the ground lamb for dogs from Raw Paws Pet Food and from Raw Feeding Miami.

Bonus: They’re less expensive, especially when you use my affiliate discount code K9Savings for 15% off (anything) at Raw Paws Pet Food.

Great post, Barbara! How do you deal with the mess? My pup likes to carry his kong all over the place…So, I only stuff it with dry foods.

Thanks, Anna! I taught the pups to stay on their towels when they eat a raw food kong inside, so thankfully there isn’t any mess, except for on the towel which I throw into the wash afterwards 😉 If Rocky insists on carrying it through the house, you could freeze it, that way there’d be little to no mess. Or maybe put up a gate in an area that’s easy to clean (tile or hardwood) and only have him carry it around in that restricted space. Or give him the kong outside when the weather allows it 😉

How did you train them to stay on the towel?! Rocky doesn’t like restricted space…LOL

BOL Rocky! I give them the “down-stay” command once they’re on their towels – I wrote about it here: https://www.k9sovercoffee.com/tips/training-a-solid-down-stay-command/

Yum!!! We LOVE frozen kongs full of goodness!! I think it’s our favorite puzzle toy too because all of the other ones we’ve tried were easily destroyed.

Agreed! Kongs really are very durable.
