I’ve discovered quite a few brands over the course of this year who actually put our pets’ health first – they invest into truly healthy, nutritious products instead of a glamorous marketing campaign which can oftentimes be misleading.
Disclaimer: This is a sponsored post ~ FeedPetPurveyor sent us 5 trial size bags of Grandma Lucy’s freeze-dried dog food in return for an honest review. Neither FeedPetPurveyor nor Grandma Lucy’s are responsible for the content of this blog post.
Thank you so much, dear Jenni from FeedPetPurveyor, for introducing me to Grandma Lucy’s, who has been family-owned & operated since 1999!
FeedPetPurveyor ~ A Healthy Pet Lifestyle Market
FeedPetPurveyor is a Tampa, FL based healthy lifestyle market for pets with a physical as well as an online store. They carry a variety of healthy nutrition & essentials for both dogs & cats.
The pups’ Grandma Lucy’s trial size bags were sent out in FeedPetPurveyor’s signature burlap sack – I simply LOVE the way it looks and will be sure to repurpose it, possibly as a puppy stocking for Christmas 😉
Who is Grandma Lucy’s?
Benefits of Freeze-Dried Dog Food
Freeze-dried dog food has several benefits – it’s shelf stable since the water & oxygen have been removed; it’s lightweight for the same reason (doesn’t contain any water) – meaning a 3 lb bag makes 14 pounds of fresh food, and a 10 lb bag makes 46 pounds of fresh food!
It takes a very short amount of time to rehydrate once (ideally warm) water has been added, and is ready to be consumed by your best friend within 3-5 minutes.
Above listed qualities make freeze-dried dog foods the perfect travel food for all pet parents feeding a raw or homemade diet to bring along on car rides, camping trips, as well as extended hikes.
1.5 oz Trial Size
As mentioned above, FeedPetPurveyor sent us 5 1.5 oz trial size bags. I very much like the option of being able to purchase a very small amount of a new dog food to see if it will be well received. I can’t think of another dog food company I’ve used before who offers this.
Variety of Protein Choices for Picky Eaters
Grandma Lucy’s has 3 different lines of freeze-dried dog food which come in a variety of protein sources. The different proteins available are:
Chicken, Pork, Lamb, Venison, Bison (Grain-Free Artisan Line)
Chicken, Lamb, Rabbit, Goat, Fish (Grain-Free Pureformance Line)
Turkey, Fish, Chicken (Grain-Free Valor Line, Made With Quinoa)
All 3 lines also come in a pre-mix form consisting of freeze-dried vegetables, fruits, vitamins, and minerals.
These pre-mixes are perfect to add to a home cooked diet, as well as to a raw diet following the B.A.R.F. model (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food, or Bones And Raw Food). The B.A.R.F. way to feed raw includes vegetables & fruits, whereas the Prey Model doesn’t (only consists of meat, bones, and organs).

How To Prepare The Freeze-Dried Food
Preparing Grandma Lucy’s freeze-dried food is as easy as 1, 2, 3:
I added the trial size bags to the pups’ respective raw meals; Missy began with the Pureformance grain-free Rabbit as a side dish, if you will, and Buzz got to taste-test the Pureformance grain-free Chicken (we also received Pureformance Fish, which the pups shared as a dinner topper, and Valor Chicken & Turkey the pups had as a breakfast topper).
Let me tell you that both foods smelled delicious once I added the warm water – especially Missy’s rabbit reminded me of a comfort-food-style stew on a cold winter’s day. All that was missing was a roaring fire in a wood-burning fireplace and a winter wonderland scenery outside 😉
Bottom Line ~ 8 Paws Up!
Have you heard of Grandma-Lucy’s and/or have your pups tried a freeze-dried dog food? As always, we’d love to hear from you in our comment section!

No but this sounds yummy!!
It is…I briefly considered trying a little myself…
Thanks for the review – Missy & Buzz both look like they can’t wait!
Glad you liked it…and the food is made in your state!
The pups really enjoyed it, even Buzz who can be picky 😉
I’ve never heard of this before but you know I am learning so much about raw food diets and also am always looking for new ways to keep Miss Cocoa healthy and happy!! I like that you can get small samples because you never know how they are going to like it. Thank you again for the reviews!!
I’m so glad you like them, Julie! I think it’s pretty cool that there are a variety of high-quality brands out there to ensure that feeding time never gets boring.
Although we now feed primarily raw, I make sure to have a variety of freeze-dried/dehydrated foods in our pantry – they come in super handy when we’re in between our raw orders and keep the pups guessing what Mommy will fill their bowls with 😉
8 paws up, your gang really loved it. what a great review.
Thank you, JoAnn, they did 🙂
I was planning to feed Honey dehydrated food on the boat. I loved the idea of saving weight and storage room besides the good nutrition..
Unfortunately, a serving for a dog her size was huge. She got tired of eating before she had her fill.
Since Grandma Lucy is Florida based, maybe we’ll get to see it on our travels and give it a try.
Oh wow, Honey got tired of eating before her bowl was empty?! She must not have been crazy about the food…Missy weighs a little over 50 lb, and Grandma Lucy’s feeding recommendations were about 2 cups per day for her weight, so 1 cup per meal – would that be ok for Honey?
