Green Beef Tripe for Dogs from Raw Paws Pet Food: An Affordable Superfood

I checked off green beef tripe for dogs from my to-feed list! Yay!

My pups Missy & Buzz have been eating raw dog food since 2015, and they love their green tripe.

So far, they had some freeze-dried green tripe treats (which they loved!), but they had yet to get their paws on the real, raw deal.

What Exactly Is Green Beef Tripe For Dogs?

Green beef tripe is the nutrient rich lining of a cow’s stomach.

But you can also source green tripe from other ruminant animals. For example deer, sheep and goats.

“Green” means that the tripe has not been cleaned, bleached nor scalded.

The bleaching process actually destroys all the valuable nutrients tripe comes with, and is the kind you can find at grocery stores.

The Benefits of Green Beef Tripe for Dogs

Green tripe is a natural, nutritional powerhouse that dogs go bonkers for.

Missy & Buzz are no exception!!

Green beef tripe for dogs is easily digestible because it contains high amounts of digestive enzymes (probiotic lactobacillus acidophilus = good intestinal bacteria).

That said, it’s great for treating both diarrhea and constipation.

Its thick & chewy texture along with its gastric juices helps keep those K9 pearlies clean.

Green tripe also has the perfect ratio of calcium to phosphorus: 1:1. It’s important to feed our pups the right amount of both of those essential minerals.

That’s especially true when you’re feeding homemade raw dog food.

Good to know: raw meaty bones are another source of calcium and phosphorus.

Defective bone formation is one consequence of an imbalance in calcium & phosphorus in a dog’s diet.

Green tripe is also rich in amino acids. They’re the building blocks of protein, and a diet lacking in them causes eye & heart diseases.

It’s also rich in essential fatty acids, both Omega-3s and Omega-6s.

They’re important for a healthy skin & coat, joint health, and keeping inflammation away from the body.

Overall, green tripe provides a wonderful boost to any dog’s immune system! A true superfood!

How To Prepare The Frozen Green Beef Tripe from Raw Paws Pet Food

The ground green beef tripe arrived at our front door solid frozen, which meant that it had to thaw before the pups were able to eat it!

I placed it into a large casserole dish and let it sit in the fridge for about a day and a half.

It was still not completely thawed, but I was able to cut it into smaller portions using a sharp knife on a cutting board.

I then measured out 3 oz (85 gr) portions of tripe using my digital kitchen scale and lots of plastic food storage containers.

The pups each had 3 oz of green tripe mixed in with their raw dog food breakfast and dinner over the next 5 days (60 oz).

They had the remaining 20 oz as little snacks here & there. I gave them a little at first to get them used to the new food.

Suffice to say that they INSTANTLY loved it and, of course, had no trouble digesting it.

I also used some for our video review.

How does the Raw Paws Pet Food Beef Green Tripe ship?

Missy and Buzz are excited about their shipment of green tripe from Raw Paws Pet Food

As mentioned above, the green tripe arrived in a 5 lb solid frozen tube.

How is this possible given the fact that it had to travel from Indianapolis, IN to the Ft. Bragg, NC area (about 650 mi = 1000 km)?

Well, it shipped via FedEx Home inside an insulated “ThermoSafe” Shipper that’s filled with dry ice and packing peanuts!

Update 2020: Raw Paws Pet Food no longer carries the 5 lb green tripe tubes, but has several other units of green tripe for sale!

Are There Any Cons?

I’ll be honest with you – green tripe tends to be a bit on the smelly side. It’s kind of an earthy smell.

If you truly can’t get past the smell, you could get freeze-dried/dehydrated green tripe for dogs.

It’s still super healthy and smells MUCH less, and works great as training treats or food toppers for picky eaters.

Since I don’t have an overly sensitive nose, I don’t mind it too much.

PLUS, any food that comes with all those amazing health benefits can have a little smelly side to it.

Have your pups had the chance to get their paws on some raw, green tripe? As always, we’d love to hear from you in our comment section!

Oh gosh. Ok I have a sensitive nose and so does Military Husband. Lol. Anything that smells off isn’t great for us. Might be good for puppies but Military Husband starts gagging everywhere lol.

You answered my question when you said it does have a smell :). I think I mentioned this before but Cocoa has a sensitive tummy so I am always interested in food that can help her and her digestive system!!

Wow this food sounds super healthy and nutritious. The whole “smell” thing doesn’t bother me. In fact, the smellier the better, I say! Thanks for turning me on to this food!

I know tripe is good for the dogs, but I can’t get past the smell…

Lol, yea, there is that! You could feed it outside or go for the freeze-dried alternative. Almost no smell there!

My mom was raised on a farm so I grew up eating all kinds of interesting things, like beef tongue, stuffed pig stomach, and calves brains.

I giggled once when about 2 decades ago I read an ad from Iams saying their food didn’t have any icky things in it like liver and other organ meats. I thought they didn’t know what was good.

And now, apparently a few dog food companies are realizing how good such things are. At least if you don’t feed the animals they’re made from lots of yucky stuff to begin with.

Lol, I would have giggled, too…silly Iams people 😉 Yes, there really are a variety of companies selling raw dog food online – I love getting to explore them!
