Meal prep for dogs - The Ultimate Guide for Beginners

Raw Dog Food Meal Prep For Beginners

Have you ever thought about raw dog food meal prep?

As in making your own raw meals for dogs because ordering the premade kind adds up quickly, especially towards the end of the month?

If you have thought about it but never followed through, maybe the idea seemed dauting at best and impossible at first.

Or maybe your vet keeps telling you that homemade raw dog food won’t be balanced and will hurt your pup in the long run.

Maybe your better half thinks you’re crazy for wanting to make your pup’s own raw meals because you don’t even bother cooking for them!

Hey, I get it. And I’ve been there too.

I definitely remember the look on my ex-husband’s face when I filled the tub in the spare bathroom with water and frozen individual cuts of meat to let them thaw for my very first batch of raw meals.

Sorta like “OK, she’s completely crazy now.”

He did come around when I pointed out that less money spent on raw dog food meant more money for fun stuff like motorcycles and videogames.

Don’t get me wrong, he never prepared a single raw meal himself. But at least he quit rolling his eyes at my alternative use of the guest bath tub.

In the end, saving money on raw dog food didn’t end up saving my marriage.

But for me, the potential to save money is definitely what made me overcome my fears of making my own raw meals and learning all about raw dog food meal prep.

How to make a raw diet for dogs

That was back in 2016, 6 months after I started feeding raw in 2015.

Because let me tell you, I sure know what it’s like to overspend on premade raw dog food!

My Boxer mixes Missy and Buzz weighed a combined 130lbs which quickly passed the $500 mark in premade raw dog food for both per month.

So Whatโ€™s The Cost of Making Your Own DIY Raw Dog Food?

Let me share a little math with you.

A 50 lb dog who needs 2% of her target body weight in meat per day eats about 1 lb/day (thatโ€™s for a dog who exercises moderately).

That translates into 30 lb/month.

Now letโ€™s assume that dog does poorly with chicken, which is why you canโ€™t source this (inexpensive) meat.

Bummer!

BUT even if you feed turkey, beef, and lamb, you can get your hands on 30 lb for $70-100, as long as you buy the meat when itโ€™s on sale.

And trust me, I constantly find and buy meat thatโ€™s on sale, or inexpensive to begin with.

For example, Walmart carries turkey necks for a couple bucks, and my local grocery store marks their ground lamb down to 2.99-4.99/lb on a regular basis.

Those $70-100 are the same price youโ€™d pay for a โ€œhigh qualityโ€ bag of kibble like Annamaet or Orijen dog food.

-> Btw, this is how you do the math:
50 (body weight)/100 = 0.5 x 2(percentage) = 1 lb = 16 oz
