Here’s how I came up with this particular recipe.

A few weeks ago, I had just received my monthly order of raw dog food fromย Raw Paws Pet Food.

When I unpacked the box, I noticed that I ordered a bag of freeze-dried beef green tripe TREATS instead of raw frozen ground beef green tripe. DUH.ย

I love adding fresh green tripe to the pups’ raw meals because green tripe is such a digestive superfood.

So I was somewhat bummed at first, but then I figured why not use it as a food puzzle filler?

Mixed with some peanut butter, this would work great in a Kong.

And there’s no shortage of Kongs in my home!

So that’s what I did, right then and there! The pups had already been drooling more or less while watching me unpack their food box.

So I figured I might as well whip up a quick KONG filler for them thatโ€™ll keep them entertained for a while.ย

Filled food puzzles like KONGs are wonderful boredom busters for dogs, and I use them whenever I need to keep the pups busy.

Green Tripe Treats From Raw Paws Pet Food & Peanut Butter

All I used was some creamy peanut butter and about a tablespoon of the freeze-dried green tripe treats from Raw Paws.

Tip: For the peanut butter, make sure not to use any that comes with the sweetener xylitol. That’s toxic to dogs!

I mixed it all together in a bowl, and then filled the pupsโ€™ respective KONGs with the scrumptious mรฉlange.

It took them about 20 minutes to empty the KONGs. However, they spent at least an additional 30 licking at them, making sure they REALLY got every last tiny bit.

Green tripe has that effect โ€“ it really is doggie crack, but the healthy kind!!!

Whatโ€™s So Special About Green Tripe For Dogs?

Iโ€™ll give you a quick overview of green tripe. If youโ€™d like to read up more about it, please check out my post on:

So tripe is the stomach lining of a ruminant animal that contains high amounts of digestive enzymes. For example, cow, goat, sheep, or deer.

Those enzymes are the good intestinal bacteria that support healthy digestion. That said, tripe is easily digestible, and itโ€™s wonderful to treat both diarrhea & constipation.

Tripe is rich in amino acids & essential fatty acids, which also makes it a great immune-system booster!

Green tripe means that the tripe hasnโ€™t been processed (neither bleached, cleaned, nor scalded), which is why you wonโ€™t find green tripe in human supermarkets.

Crumbly Texture Makes These Green Tripe Treats A Perfect Food Topper

The tripe these particular freeze-dried treats are made of is sourced from the stomach muscles of USA raised, free range cows.

They come in a 4 oz resealable bag, which actually makes it great to take along on road trips. The texture is pretty crumbly though, which is why I wouldnโ€™t recommend taking those treats along to a training class.

However, they do make a fantastic dog food topper. Additionally, they can also be used to transition a dog from kibble to raw.

If you have a picky eater, try using some green tripe treats to top his food off with, or use it as a tasty treat for a good boy or girl!

I really like this idea, Barbara. I haven’t given Haley green tripe before and this would be an easy way to work some into her diet. Do you happen to know how long you can keep the freeze dried version in your pantry? I imagine it would last awhile being freeze dried. You always have great ideas for easing into the raw diet world!

I’m glad you like it, Elaine & have a feeling that Haley would become a doggie crack addict in no time ๐Ÿ˜‰ I actually just checked the treat bag but didn’t see an expiration date on there. I’ll go ahead and ask Raw Paws – I agree with you & believe that it should last a while. The freeze-dried raw food we have in our pantry from Grandma Lucy’s says that it will last 6 months. Dehydrated treats from Treats Happen will last 12 months.

My guys are not big Kong fans…never took to them. They do like other treat puzzles though, so we make use of them all the time.

It’s a good thing there’s a variety of different Food Puzzles out there – the KONGs are my favorite, but the mixture can definitely fit elsewhere, too ๐Ÿ˜‰

Kongs are the best for filling. I used to only buy almond butter and Cocoa was not a fan and now I get peanut butter and she really likes it. And we are always looking for new and exciting but healthy fillers for it!!

Agreed ๐Ÿ˜‰ Tripe definitely ticks off the “exciting” part of your filler requirement!

What a great idea. How much green tripe do you feed on a normal day? Of course brown dawgs only use their kongs for fetching. lol

Thanks ๐Ÿ˜‰ Since green tripe is considered an organ, it makes up about 5% of the raw feeding equation (80% muscle meat, 10% bone, 5% liver, 5% other organs such as tripe or heart). So I don’t always have tripe on hand, but when I do, I add about 5% of it to their total food allowance per meal.

Haha, excellent, KONGs are awesome for fetching!! I like how bouncy they are, that they’re made of natural rubber, top rack dishwasher safe…it doesn’t get any better than that!!!! (Yes, I’m a huge KONG fan *grin*.)
