What’s inside our Real Dog treat subscription box this month?

First of, nothing but healthy, drool-worthy goodness! If you’re like me and don’t want to treat your pups with cookies that are made with a ton of unpronounceable, downright questionable ingredients, then you may want to keep on reading…

I chose this particular dog subscription box because all of its contents are single-ingredient treats/chews that are made right here in the United States of America.

They’re unprocessed and have been air-dried. They also don’t contain any preservatives, antibiotics, hormones or additives, AND they’re USDA inspected & human grade.

Ever since Missy kicked cancer’s butt in early 2015, I have become a lot more selective with what makes it into her and her brother’s bodies. In other words, I refuse to feed them crap. There you have it.

The Real Dog subscription box is a monthly food-based subscription box that doesn’t contain any toys or accessories.

Our particular box is a treat & chew box that comes with three different treats and three different chews for $35.

Other boxes that recently became available as well are a Mini Treat & Chew Box, a Chew Only Box, and a Treat Only Box.

Real Dog Box: 3 Dog Treats

Some of the dog treats make great training treats because they can be broken into smaller pieces.

Others make better food toppers because of their consistency.

Salmon Skins – Sourced From Canada, Made In California

The Seafood Treat of the month of December are salmon skin and chunks. Salmon is a lean protein and a great source of Omega-3 fatty acids. The fatty acids support brain development, a healthy skin and coat, and keep the immune system strong.

They’re also a wonderful alternative to fish oil.

I alternate between Bonnie & Clyde’s Wild-Caught Fish Oil and these treats, and just recently also placed my first order of thread herring with Raw Feeding Miami.

These pieces of salmon are on the oily side of things, so I like to top the pups’ meals off with them instead of using them as a training treat.

Alternatively, I offer them on a towel.

Something to keep in mind if you had considered feeding them on a carpeted area or a nice rug.

Chicken Livers – Sourced And Made In California

Chicken liver is the organ meat of the month of December. It’s a great source of protein, vitamins A, D, E, K, and B12, and minerals like folate, iron, zinc, and phosphorus.

Since they only make up 5% of the raw feeding equation and they’re a little high in cholesterol, I only feed them in small quantities.

Pork Hearts -Sourced And Made In California

Pork heart is the muscle meat of the month of December. Yes, you read that right, heart is a muscle and not considered an organ. That makes it lean and low in fat.

It’s a wonderful source of vitamin B6, iron, phosphorus, zinc, copper, and selenium. It is also high in Coenzyme Q10, an antioxidant needed to generate energy and support healthy organ function.

The pork heart treats can easily be broken into smaller pieces, which make them the perfect training treat for us.

Real Dog Box: 3 Chews

All chews promote great oral and dental health as they provide jaw exercise and scrape off excess plaque and tartar buildup. As a safety precaution, I always supervise any chewing activity. I do that to ensure that the pups don’t swallow larger pieces without having broken them down into smaller pieces first.

If your dog has the tendency of gulping, you could hold one end of the chew while your pup chews on the other end.

That way he’s forced to slow down. It’s also great to discourage resource guarding.

Beef Aortas – Sourced And Made In California

Aorta is the largest artery leading out of the heart. After blood passes through the lungs to pick up oxygen, it travels through the aorta and is pumped to the rest of the body.

That’s why the aorta has a tough, cartilage-like texture and makes for a nutrient-rich, enjoyable chew.

Real Dog suggests to freeze the aortas if you have a teething puppy. That’s because the cooling effect of the chew will offer relief for the pup’s sore gums. Another bonus is that it’ll last longer.

Turkey Necks – Sourced And Made In California

Turkey necks are a lean, rich source of selenium, zinc and iron.

Selenium is a trace mineral that boosts the immune system, while zinc is great for healthy skin and coats.

Iron is essential for the release and transportation of oxygen in the bloodstream and muscles.

Real Dog suggests to offer the turkey necks outdoors because they’re a little on the stinky side.

I personally don’t mind the smell since I feed green tripe on a regular basis, which is much more challenging to my nose.

Pig Skins – Sourced And Made In California

These pig skins have been scrubbed and trimmed of fat without the use of bleach or any other chemicals. That’s how traditional raw hides are made, by the way – eek.

They are high in protein and low in carbohydrates and cholesterol. The rolled sides of the skin help in scraping off excess plaque and tartar buildup.

Real Dog Box: Bottom Line

Eight months into subscribing to Real Pet Food’s treat/chew box, and we are still excited when our monthly box arrives at our front door.

While I received our very first box for free in May of this year in exchange for a review, I have purchased all subsequent boxes and will continue to do so.

Enthusiastically recommended to all dog pawrents who are taking a more species-appropriate treat/chew/food approach!

Do you offer single-ingredient treats and chews? As always, I’d love to hear from you in the comment section below this blog post!
