Why Is It Good to Add Raw Duck Meat to Your Dog’s Raw Dog Food Rotation?

But why raw duck for dogs in the first place?

Well, ideally it should be one of several protein sources you feed your pup.

That’s because variety is important in raw feeding. After all, different cuts of meat from different animals contain different nutrients.

That said, duck is a red meat that’s a bit fattier than other animals – unless you hunt wild ducks. Those are leaner than the domesticated kind.

Either way, it’s one of my favorite protein sources for raw meaty bones.

I feed raw ground duck as well as the following cuts of raw duck:

  • Hearts
  • Gizzards
  • Heads
  • Necks
  • Wings
  • Feet
  • Frames

Is Duck Good for Dogs with Allergies?

Duck is also a cooling protein.

That’s usually great if you have a dog who suffers from skin inflammation, like my pup Wally.

However, dogs with a duck food sensitivity won’t do well on it.

Raw Duck for Dogs: Where to Buy It

The following raw dog food retailers carry raw duck for dogs (and cats!) in varying forms.

Some sell ground raw duck for dogs that’s ready to feed as is, and others sell parts of raw duck.

The latter need to be fed with other cuts of meat in order to be considered complete.

Good to know: Adult dogs eat 2-4% of their target body weight in raw meat per day.

Of those 2-4%:

  • 70-80% are muscle meat including fish
  • 10% are raw meaty bones, and
  • 10% are secreting organs (5% liver, 5% other secreting organ).

If you choose to add plant matter to your dog’s raw meals, decrease the muscle meat to 70% and feed 10% plant matter (veggies, fruit, nuts, and seeds).
